DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Welcome to The Tempest and our interpretation of Shakespeare’s enchanted isle! This fantasy may have been the last play written exclusively by the Bard, and to my mind is one of his most poignant. It’s the tale of a deposed duke and his daughter who have survived a dozen years on an imaginary Mediterranean island before a shipwreck brings both friend and foe to their shore.

In a mere eight weeks, our intrepid cast of mariners, nobles, clowns, sprites, monsters and goddesses have made the play their own, playing multiple characters and alternating scenes. Our Tuesday and Thursday groups came together to rehearse for the first and only time three days ago; we had a blast, and I couldn’t be prouder of them. It’s not perhaps The Tempest as Shakespeare envisioned it, but I think these young actors have captured its humor, humanity and magic.

Thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time and talents, schlepped actors to rehearsals, and played “practice buddy” so kids could learn lines. Hudson Hall is a special place at the heart of our community where kids, 400 year old playwrights, and even aging drama teachers can find a home. Our “brave new world” starts here.
