Hudson Hall is home to Handel on the Hudson, an acclaimed opera series led by director R.B. Schlather in collaboration with the early-music ensemble Ruckus. Rodelinda (2023) and Giulio Cesare (2025) were named New York Times Critics’ Picks and helped establish Hudson Hall as an exciting new destination for baroque opera in the United States. The series combines rigorous musical excellence with open rehearsals, residencies, and community engagement, supporting the development of rising opera artists while inviting audiences into the creative process.
In 2017, Hudson Hall produced The Mother of Us All to celebrate the reopening of its fully restored theater and the centenary of women’s suffrage in New York. Directed by R.B. Schlather, this site-specific, community-cast production of Virgil Thomson and Gertrude Stein’s musical pageant was named one of the Best Classical Musical Performances of 2017 by the New York Times.
