ETHEL returns to Hudson with exclusive preview performances of its fully realized Circus – Wandering City, the acclaimed string quartet’s new multimedia work inspired by the American circus and its people. Under the direction of projection designer Grant McDonald, the work combines stunning imagery and film from the Ringling Museum’s vast archive with original music composed and performed live by ETHEL. Revealing the stories from beneath the Big Top, ETHEL’s Circus pays homage to America’s most celebrated and iconographic circus, the recently shuttered Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey’s Circus.

The production has been two years in the making, which included a workshop residency last summer hosted by Hudson Hall and the Second Ward Foundation. This fall, ETHEL returns to Hudson Hall for a residency to finalize the staging of Circus – Wandering City and to present these special preview performances of the completed production in advance of the world premiere at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Florida, kicking off a two-year world tour.

Circus – Wandering City has been co-commissioned by BAM for the 2018 Next Wave Festival.
